Winemaker Mateus Nicolau de Almeida is a fifth generation winemaker from the Douro Valley. The Douro Valley, with its labyrinth of terraced bends in the (Douro) river tucked away from the Atlantic winds, was historically known for port, but it produces equally remarkable and interesting dry table wine.  In fact, Mateus' grandfather Fernando was the first winemaker to popularize dry table wine (i.e. not port!) from the region after visiting Bordeaux in the 1940s, and went on to make the culty Barca Velha bottlings until the late 1990s. Claret is the historic British slang for Bordeaux (and Bordeaux-tasting) red table wines. Similar to its La Boutanche line, Selection Massale offers its favorite Claret-style blends from around the world under its own exclusive label.
