Mastroberardino is the largest producer of premium wines in Campania. In addition to the fact that Mastroberardino produces some of the best wines in the region, the company is also known for its great contribution to the preservation of local (autochthonous) varieties. Antonio Mastroberardino, the grandfather of the current winemaker, Piero, is well known for his dedicated effort to revitalize Campania’s ancient native varieties of grapes. He is credited with saving the rare Fiano, Greco and Aglianico varietals after they were nearly wiped out by phylloxera in the 1930s. Moreover, in 1996, the Italian government entrusted Mastroberardino with an important mission to restore ancient vineyards near the city of Pompeii.
