Elgin, South Africa
The term nomad implies a lack of origin or place — perhaps an appropriate description for Kosie van der Merwe, the globe-trotter now making wine in both South Africa and Germany. But while he may produce wine in various locations, the respect for and celebration of each terroir is unparalleled. Kosie comes from a 5th generation farming family in the Swartland, so at an early age, he developed a deep respect for the land. The South African range comes from Elgin, a cooler region best known for quality Pinot Noir. But Kosie has opted for the road less travelled, producing beautifully fresh and compelling wines from Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Nomad's German project showcases an unconventional side of Mosel Riesling. Kosie has also advocated for and experimented with hybrid plantings, a stance that is sure to raise eyebrows in a region firmly rooted in the Riesling tradition.
